Jerrabomberra Wetands

The Jerrabomberra Wetlands are the most significant wetlands in the ACT.

The new East Lake Durban development is to be in close proximity to this important habitat and, as with all new developments has the potential to affect it’s delicate ecosystem.

A variety of environmental, community and governmental organisations will explain their involvement in the area and discuss what is currently being done to help minimise the threats to the Jerrabomberra Wetlands and its rare and beautiful birds and wildlife.

Tidbinbilla Management Plan

With the deadline for submissions on the proposed Tidbinbilla Management Plan looming, now is the ideal time to discuss how we want the Tidbinbilla precinct (Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, Birrigai and Jedbinbilla) to be managed.

This forum will have a panel for questions and answers, which will then flow into open discussion. Sitting on the panel will be Trish Bootes from TAMS, Kevin Frawley the author of the management plan and a representative from National Parks Association.

The Conservation Council ACT urges member groups in particular to take advantage of this opportunity and attend the forum to discuss issues arising from the plan.

Drinks and nibbles will be provided. Entry by gold coin donation, member groups and eco-activists free!

Community Fair O'Connor

On Sunday 20th of October the Conservation Council had a stall at the Inner North Community Fair. One of the highlights was a display on the proposed Banksia St wetland hosted by the Department of the Environment, Climate Change, Energy and Water. The wetland has been designed to improve catchment water quality and to increase urban habitat.  It will be Canberra’s?first retrofitted urban wetland to incorporate an ephemeral section, that dries out in summer. It turned out to be a very successful day with many people attending to enjoy the food and displays.

Bushcare Activity

On Tuesday 22nd September we went and helped Ranger Grant spread some Kangaroo Grass seed over bare patches made as a result of vehicles and machinery in the area to erect the Mulligans Flat Sanctuary fence. Although a little windy it was a lovely day and it was very satisfying doing something that was actively helping the recovery of Mulligans Flat. Thank you to Sybil Free who volunteered her time to help.

Bike Ride with a Ranger

What a great ride! Those who attended were treated to a special ranger led bike ride and heritage tour. We visited some special heritage areas and even held an aboriginal stone artefact! We then rode back to the shearing pens and had tea and damper that had been cooked on an open fire. Thank you to Ranger Grant who led this special ride.

Bird Watching Workshop

The Conservation Council in conjunction with Forde recently hosted a workshop on "An Introduction to Bird Watching".

Eighteen people turned up to the workshop early on Saturday morning. Our leader Doug Laing gave us a 10-minute introduction to Mulligans Flat and the bird life. We then went into Mulligans Flat for a walk along the Old Coach Road. It was beautiful weather and we spotted many different birds and learnt to recognize some of their calls. Two of the more exciting birds we spotted were the Superb Parrot and Jacky Winter. For a full list of our sightings, kindly provided by Malcolm Fyfe, click 'read more'.

June Library Display

Our display in the Gungahlin Library!  In June we created a small display at the Gungahlin Library featuring some of the plants and animals you might find in Gungahlin's woodlands and grasslands. Gungahlin library is located in the corner of Ernest Cavanagh Street and Gungahlin Place in Gungahlin Market Place, Gungahlin ACT.

Gungahlin Market

On Saturday 22nd of August Tim and Anna had a stall at the Gungahlin Markets to promote our website. We were giving away our Gungahlin’s Treasures booklet as well as bookmarks, cards and pamphlets about the Conservation Council and local nature reserves. It was also a good opportunity to meet Gungahlin Residents.
